The pleasure of eating

by Wendell Berry

Often, at the end of a Conference on the decline of rural life and agriculture in America, someone in the audience asks: “What can those who dwell in the city?” “Eat responsibly” answer usually. Of course I try to explain what I mean with this expression, but I always seem to not having said enough. Now let me try to offer a broader explanation. I start from the proposition that eating is an agricultural Act and eco-friendly. Eat the drama concludes the annual food economy that begins with the planting and emergence. Many eaters do not know this to be true. Think of power as agricultural production, Maybe, but don't consider themselves part of agriculture. We consider “consumers”. If they think a little’ deeper, must recognize to be passive consumers. Buy what they want, or what were persuaded to want, within the limits of what they can buy. Pagano, mostly without protest, the price that is asked. And generally know nothing fundamental arguments about the quality and cost of what the production is sold: how really cool, how pure or clean, or free from hazardous chemicals, from that distance comes and how much the added transport costs, as industrial processing, packaging and advertising affect the price. When food has been transformed, manipulated or precooked, that these operations have had effects on its quality, nutritional value and price? The majority of the inhabitants of cities doing their shopping say that foods are produced on farms. But usually they do not know which farms, or what types of farms, where are, or what knowledge and skills are involved in agriculture. Apparently they have no doubt that farmers continue to produce, but don't know how to or overcoming obstacles. for them, Therefore, power is a pretty abstract idea, one thing I do not know or imagine, until you see on the table or on the shelf of foodstuffs. The specialization of production results in the specialization of consumption. For example, regulars of the leisure industry are increasingly less able to enjoy yourself and have become increasingly dependent on passively paid theme providers. This is certainly true of the regulars in the food industry, they have increasingly tended to become mere consumers, liabilities, uncritical and employees. This type of consumption can be considered one of the main objectives of industrial production. The power industry have managed to persuade millions of consumers to prefer ready-made foods. Grow, Cook, bring you meals and (just like your mom) begging you to eat. There offer even in infilarvelo mouth premasticato just because they haven't figured out a way to do it which would increase profits. We can be sure they would be happy to find out. The ideal industrial consumers would be strapped to a table with a pipe in the mouth that goes directly from the plant food to his stomach.

Perhaps I exaggerate, but not by much. The industrial Eater knows that not eating is an agricultural Act, no longer knows nor imagine links that exist between the Act of eating and Earth and is therefore necessarily passive and uncritical, in layman's terms, a victim. When the food, in the minds of those who eat it, no longer tied to agriculture and land, you have a dangerous and misguided cultural amnesia. The current vision of the future “dream home” includes shopping “effortlessly” from a list of available assets on a television monitor and eat pre-cooked food through remote control. Obviously this depends and implies a perfect ignorance of the history of food consumed. Requires that citizens renounce to their hereditary dislike to buy a pig impaled on a spit. Want to make the sale of pigs in a task Mr skewered and attractive. The dreamer in this dream home by force will not know anything about the quality of this food, where does, How was produced and prepared, or what ingredients, additives, and contains residues, unless the dreamer does not engage in an accurate and continuous study of the food industry, in which case could also wake up and play an active and responsible role in the food economy. There is therefore a food policy, like any other policy, put in question our freedom. Yet (every now and then) We remember that we are not free if our minds and words are controlled by someone else. But we have failed to understand that we cannot be free if our food and resources are controlled by someone else. The condition of the passive consumer of foods is not a democratic State. One of the reasons to eat responsibly is to live free. But if there is a food policy, There is also a food and food ethics, None of which is separable from politics.

As industrial sex, industrial supply has become a poor thing, demeaning and petty. Our kitchens and other places where you eat more and more to resemble petrol stations, and our homes look increasingly to motels. “The life isn't very interesting” We seem to have decided. “Let your satisfactions are minimal, fast and distracted”. We cross our meals travel to go to work and we pass our work travel to go to “recreate” in the evening, at weekends or on holidays. And then we run at the maximum possible speed, in the noise and violence, through our recreation, because? To eat the billionth hamburger in some fast-food outlets ready to everything to improve “quality” of our lives? And all this takes place in the total oblivion of causes and effects, the possibilities and purposes of life in this world body. You can recognize this oblivion represented in its essence virginal in food industry advertising, in which food takes the same amount of actors ' makeup. If you formed a food competence on this advertisement (as some presumably make), you wouldn't if various foods have ever been or that all living beings are from the Earth, or that have been produced by human labour. The American consumer liabilities, sitting before a meal of pre-cooked foods or fast-food, see a plate covered with inert substances, anonymous, that were processed, colorful, cutlets, filled with salsa, devitalized, ground, mashed, artificial land, blend, ingraziosite and sanitized beyond any resemblance to any part of any creature ever lived on this earth. Products of nature and agriculture were made, apparently, industry products. And he who eats and is eaten is exiled from biological reality. The result is a kind of solitude is unprecedented in human experience, where eating can think of eating as a mere business transaction between him and a vendor and then only as an exchange of appetite among themselves and their own food.

And this strange Act of eating specialization is again obviously beneficial for the food industry, who has good reason to obscure the connections between food and crops. It's not right to let people know that the consumer who is eating hamburger is made with pieces of meat coming from forty different steers who have spent most of their lives standing walking in a thick layer of their droppings in a shed and power helping to pollute local waterways, or that the calf that has produced the slice on his plate has spent his life in a box that had no space to turn around…
